England’s Forgotten Capital, Half an Hour from Southampton

Before there was London, there was Winchester. King Alfred the Great rebuilt the city as the capital of his Saxon kingdom of Wessex in the 9th century, and it remained the centre of English government for the next two hundred years. Even after the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror was crowned in both Winchester and London and declared both to be capitals — only later did London take Winchester’s place. Today the city is one of England’s loveliest, with one of the great Gothic cathedrals, an extraordinary medieval Great Hall, and a high street that has been a market street for nine hundred years.

The drive from Southampton takes just 35 minutes each way, leaving over two hours in the city — comfortably enough for the cathedral, the Great Hall, and a walk along the High Street to King Alfred’s statue. Winchester is the closest of our day-tour destinations and the easiest to fit alongside an early-afternoon cruise sail-away. Coming from Southampton’s cruise terminals, you are essentially already in the suburbs.

What You’ll See on Your Tour

Two hours in Winchester is enough to take in the cathedral, the Great Hall, and a walk along the High Street to the King Alfred statue. Your driver will set you down close to the cathedral and arrange a pickup time. The whole historic centre is walkable in a leisurely circuit.

Winchester Cathedral

The longest cathedral nave in Europe — 566 feet of soaring Gothic stonework, taller and longer than York Minster. Built between 1079 and 1532 over the foundations of the earlier Old Minster (a 7th-century Saxon cathedral whose footprint is marked in the lawn outside), Winchester Cathedral has been a place of worship for nearly a thousand years. Inside, you can see the grave of Jane Austen, who lived nearby at Chawton, came to Winchester for medical treatment in her last illness, and was buried in the nave in July 1817. The cathedral is also famous for the story of William Walker, the deep-sea diver who spent six years between 1905 and 1912 working alone in pitch darkness underwater to shore up the cathedral’s collapsing foundations — saving the building from disaster. There is a statue of him inside.

The Great Hall and King Arthur’s Round Table

The Great Hall is the only surviving piece of Winchester Castle, which William the Conqueror built in 1067 and Henry III rebuilt grandly between 1222 and 1235. Henry III was born at the castle, and the hall he built is one of the finest 13th-century aisled halls in Europe — 110 feet long with tall plate-tracery windows and original flint walls. Hanging on the west wall is the famous Round Table, an 18-foot oak medieval recreation of King Arthur’s Round Table dating to around 1290. It was repainted for Henry VIII in 1522 with a portrait of Arthur sitting at the head — and the face on the painting is recognisably young Henry himself.

King Alfred’s Statue

At the eastern end of the High Street stands a 17-foot bronze statue of King Alfred the Great, raised here in 1899 to mark the millennium of his death. Alfred was crowned King of Wessex in 871, defeated the Danes, made Winchester his capital, and is the only English monarch to bear the epithet “the Great”. The statue’s outstretched arm points up the Broadway towards the cathedral, where Alfred was buried (his remains were later moved to Hyde Abbey, whose ruins are still visible nearby).

The Cathedral Close and Water Meadows

Behind the cathedral, the close opens onto Cheyney Court (one of the most-photographed Tudor buildings in England) and beyond it the Cathedral Close gardens. Walk through and you reach the River Itchen and the Winchester Water Meadows — the same path that Jane Austen walked from her last lodgings to the cathedral. The 900-year tradition of the Wayfarer’s Dole still runs at the Hospital of St Cross a mile downstream: any passing traveller who asks at the Porter’s Lodge is given a small piece of bread and a horn of beer, free of charge, just as in the 12th century.

The High Street

One of the oldest market streets in England, with a royal charter dating to the 1200s. The half-timbered Buttercross at the High Street’s centre — a 15th-century preaching cross with a statue of King Alfred on one side — has been the focal point for nine hundred years. Look up as you walk: many of the original Tudor and Georgian shopfronts survive above the modern signage. The Westgate, an 800-year-old fortified medieval gatehouse, sits at the western end and is now a small museum with views from its rooftop.

The Winchester tour is offered in two formats — a round-trip Day Tour returning to your cruise terminal or hotel, or a one-way Transfer Tour ending at any onward destination.

Day Tour

Finish: Return to your pickup point by approximately 14:00

The full driver-led tour as described above. Your driver will collect you at 10:00, drive 35 minutes to Winchester, set you down close to the cathedral for a 2-hour visit, and return you to your pickup point by approximately 13:30. Of all our day tours, Winchester offers the most generous time at the destination relative to drive time — and works comfortably for ships sailing as early as 16:00.

Transfer Tour

Designed for passengers travelling onward from Southampton with sightseeing built into the journey. Winchester sits on the M3 corridor between Southampton and London, making it a natural stop on any London-airport run — an hour and twenty minutes north of Winchester takes you to Heathrow or, by joining the M25, to Gatwick. Your driver will collect you with luggage, take in the Winchester sights on the way, and deliver you to your final destination.

Windsor Castle entry tickets must be pre-booked online at rct.uk before your tour day. Walk-up tickets are not generally available. Tickets sell out, particularly in summer and at weekends, so we recommend booking as soon as your tour date is confirmed. Audio guides, the State Apartments, St George’s Chapel (when open), and Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House are all included in the standard ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the cathedral visit take?

About an hour to 90 minutes is comfortable, including the audio guide, Jane Austen’s grave, the William Walker statue, and the medieval cloisters. The cathedral is large but well-organised and the audio guide helps you cover the highlights without losing time.

Is Jane Austen’s grave really inside the cathedral?

Yes. She is buried in the north aisle of the nave, with a black ledger stone marker, and a brass plaque was added later to reflect her literary fame. She was originally buried for her family connections; her renown as a novelist came largely after her death.

Can we visit the Great Hall and the cathedral in the same 2-hour window?

Yes — they are about a 15-minute walk apart, and a 2-hour window is enough for both if you are happy to keep moving. The Round Table is high on the west wall of the Great Hall and a quick visit (10-15 minutes) is plenty unless you want to read all the boards. The cathedral takes the larger share of the time.

What about the Hospital of St Cross and the Wayfarer’s Dole?

The Hospital of St Cross is about a mile downstream of the cathedral along the Itchen, and reaching it is a beautiful riverside walk. With our standard 2-hour window in the city, the dole walk is a stretch — possible if you want to focus on it specifically rather than the cathedral, or if you mention it at booking and we extend the tour by an hour. Extra time is charged at £40/hour, in 15-minute intervals.

What if it rains?

The cathedral and the Great Hall are both fully indoors and unaffected by weather. The High Street walk and the Buttercross are out in the open, but the historic centre has shop awnings and arcaded sections that mean a light shower is no real problem. The cathedral itself is more atmospheric in dim, wet light than on a bright day.

Can the tour finish at Heathrow or another airport?

Yes — that is what the Transfer Tour version is for. Winchester sits on the M3 corridor between Southampton and London, so it is a natural en-route stop for Heathrow (1 hour 20 minutes north), Gatwick, or any of our London routes. Choose Transfer Tour at the booking form.

Is Winchester suitable for an early-departure cruise?

Yes — this is one of Winchester’s strengths. With a 35-minute drive each way and a 2-hour visit, the tour returns to the cruise terminal by approximately 13:30, comfortably ahead of even a 16:00 sail-away. Of all our day tours, Winchester is the most flexible for tight schedules.
