Salisbury Cathedral Private Tour from Southampton
One of Europe’s Great Medieval Cathedrals, an Hour from Southampton
Salisbury Cathedral has the tallest spire in Britain. Climbing 404 feet above the Wiltshire plain, completed in 1330 and held up by reinforcements designed by Sir Christopher Wren himself, it has been the marker on the horizon for travellers, merchants, and pilgrims approaching Salisbury for nearly seven hundred years. The cathedral was built in just 38 years, between 1220 and 1258 — astonishingly fast for a medieval cathedral — which is why the building has a unity and coherence almost unique in England.
Inside, the cathedral holds the best-preserved of the four surviving original 1215 copies of the Magna Carta, the world’s oldest working mechanical clock (still ticking, still hand-wound daily, since around 1386), and Britain’s largest cathedral close. The drive from Southampton takes around an hour each way along a scenic route through the New Forest — a quietly spectacular run that adds genuine value to the day.
What You’ll See on Your Tour
Two hours at Salisbury Cathedral is enough to take in the major sights without rushing. Your driver will set you down at the Cathedral Close and arrange a pickup point and time for the return journey. The route gets you to Salisbury via the New Forest — see the New Forest tour if you’d like a fuller exploration of the Forest itself on a separate day.

Combining Tours
Some of our tours can be combined into a single longer journey — Winchester with Windsor Castle, or Stonehenge with Salisbury Cathedral, for example. Combined tours are offered as one-way Transfer Tours ending at a London airport, hotel, or other onward destination, and add a meaningful extra dimension to your day at a single fixed fare.
Available combinations are surfaced in the booking widget when you select your pickup and drop-off — the widget will show which pairings work for your timing and which do not. If you have a specific combination in mind that you do not see, please get in touch and we will see what is possible.
Two Ways to Take This Tour
The Salisbury Cathedral tour is offered in two formats — a round-trip Day Tour returning to your cruise terminal or hotel, or a one-way Transfer Tour ending at any onward destination.
Day Tour
Finish: Return to your pickup point by approximately 14:00
The full driver-led tour as described above. Your driver will collect you at 10:00, drive an hour to Salisbury via the scenic New Forest route, set you down at the Cathedral Close for a 2-hour visit, and return you to your pickup point by approximately 14:00 — comfortably ahead of the standard 17:30 cruise sail-away. Ideal for cruise passengers with time on the day of disembarkation.
Transfer Tour
Finish: Heathrow, Gatwick, or Bournemouth Airport, a London hotel, or other onward destination
Designed for passengers travelling onward from Southampton with sightseeing built into the journey. Your driver will collect you with luggage from your cruise terminal or hotel, take in Salisbury Cathedral on the way, and deliver you to your final destination. Salisbury sits roughly between Southampton and London — about an hour and forty-five minutes from Heathrow — but the tour can be combined with any of our airport or London routes including Gatwick if your schedule allows.
What’s Included in Your Tour Fare
Every tour fare we quote is a genuine fixed price per vehicle. The number you see at booking is the number you pay, regardless of traffic or stop times within the agreed schedule.
- Safeguarding-certified, smartly dressed, professional driver for the full tour
- Private vehicle for the duration — no other passengers, no shared transport
- All fuel, tolls, parking, and ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) charges where applicable
- Driver commentary on the route, the cathedral, and its history
- Flexible itinerary tweaks on the day where time allows
Cathedral entry is by donation and is not included in the tour fare — please give what you feel the visit is worth at the welcome desk. The Magna Carta exhibition and the Tower Tour are paid extras and should be booked directly with the cathedral. See our other tours for alternatives if Salisbury is not the right fit.
Passengers are welcome to bring their own child seats or boosters; we are not able to supply these.
Why Cruise Passengers Choose Paragon for the Salisbury Tour
Salisbury is one of our most-booked tours, and we have been driving the Southampton-to-Salisbury route for over 40 years. The scenic route from Southampton’s cruise terminals cuts straight through the New Forest, and our drivers know the parts of the road where ponies are most likely to be grazing on the verges, the lay-bys with the best New Forest photo stops, and the quietest approach into Salisbury whatever the time of day.
Vehicle choice is confirmed when you book, based on your group size — saloon for one to four passengers, MPV for up to six, minivan for up to eight. Every booking is handled by Paragon directly. You will not be passed to a subcontractor.

4 SEATER EXECUTIVE SEDAN (Saloon)

Frequently Asked Questions
Cathedral entry itself is by donation — please give what feels appropriate at the welcome desk. The Magna Carta exhibition is included in your donation. Optional extras (the Tower Tour, audio guides, refreshments at the Refectory Restaurant) are paid separately at the cathedral.
Two hours, which is enough for the Magna Carta, the spire from below, the world’s oldest clock, the close, and a coffee. If you want to add the Tower Tour (an extra 90 minutes climbing the spire) it is best to book this on the cathedral’s website in advance, and discuss with your driver before booking the tour so we can arrange extra time on the day. Extra time is charged at £40 per hour, in 15-minute intervals.
Tower tours and other behind-the-scenes tours need to be pre-booked with the cathedral and tend to sell out, particularly in summer. We recommend booking these online at salisburycathedral.org.uk before your tour day. Mention your timed slot to your driver and the day’s pacing can be adjusted around it.
The drive from Southampton to Salisbury runs along the western edge of the New Forest, passing through woodland, heath, and small villages. You may see ponies, donkeys, or cattle grazing on the verges. If New Forest scenery is what you are looking for, our dedicated New Forest tour explores the area more thoroughly.
The cathedral itself is fully indoors — and a rainy day can actually make the cathedral atmosphere more striking, with the rain on the cloister roof and the Chapter House lit gently inside. The cathedral close is most enjoyable in the dry; if rain is heavy on the day, we will time the visit to keep the close walking to a minimum.
Yes — that is what the Transfer Tour version is for. Salisbury sits roughly between Southampton and London, so it works particularly well with a Heathrow Transfer Tour finish, but it can be combined with any of our airport or London routes. Choose Transfer Tour at the booking form and select your finishing destination.
If you would like to add a visit to one of the close attractions in addition to the cathedral, mention it at booking and we will plan the time. A typical 4-hour Day Tour does not allow for a full second museum visit, but a quick walk-around or coffee stop at one of them is easy to fit in.
Other Private Tours from Southampton
Salisbury pairs naturally with other Wiltshire and southern-England tours. The Stonehenge tour covers the great prehistoric monument eight miles up the road, and the New Forest tour explores the woodland the Salisbury route passes through.
