Salisbury Cathedral has the tallest spire in Britain. Climbing 404 feet above the Wiltshire plain, completed in 1330 and held up by reinforcements designed by Sir Christopher Wren himself, it has been the marker on the horizon for travellers, merchants, and pilgrims approaching Salisbury for nearly seven hundred years. The cathedral was built in just 38 years, between 1220 and 1258 — astonishingly fast for a medieval cathedral — which is why the building has a unity and coherence almost unique in England.

Inside, the cathedral holds the best-preserved of the four surviving original 1215 copies of the Magna Carta, the world’s oldest working mechanical clock (still ticking, still hand-wound daily, since around 1386), and Britain’s largest cathedral close. The drive from Southampton takes around an hour each way along a scenic route through the New Forest — a quietly spectacular run that adds genuine value to the day.

Two hours at Salisbury Cathedral is enough to take in the major sights without rushing. The Spire

At 404 feet (123 m), Salisbury’s spire is the tallest in Britain and one of the great achievements of medieval engineering. It was added between 1310 and 1330 — fifty years after the rest of the cathedral was finished — and weighs 6,500 tonnes. The four pillars at the base of the spire visibly bend inwards under the weight, and only the addition of bracing arches, anchor irons, and Sir Christopher Wren’s reinforcing tie-beams (designed in 1668) have kept it upright. If you have a head for heights, the optional Tower Tour climbs 332 steps to the base of the spire itself, with views across to the Wiltshire downs.

The World’s Oldest Working Clock

Tucked into a corner of the cathedral nave is a wrought-iron clock dating to around 1386. It has no face — it was built to chime the hours, not to be looked at — and it is wound by hand every day. It is widely accepted as the oldest working mechanical clock in the world, predating the wider use of clocks with dials by roughly a century.

The Magna Carta

In 1215, after his nobles cornered him at Runnymede, King John signed the Magna Carta — the founding document of the principle that even a king is bound by the law. Forty original copies were made; only four have survived. Two are in the British Library, one is at Lincoln Cathedral, and the fourth — the best-preserved of all of them — is here at Salisbury, displayed in the octagonal 13th-century Chapter House. It came to Salisbury in the days after the signing because Elias of Dereham, who supervised the cathedral’s construction, was the man King John charged with distributing the original copies.

The Cathedral Close

Britain’s largest cathedral close — 80 acres of lawns, walled gardens, and historic houses surrounding the cathedral — was described by the architectural historian Pevsner as “the most beautiful of England’s closes”. John Constable painted it more than once, and the rolling green expanse is exactly the picture-postcard setting most visitors come for. Four further attractions sit within the close: Salisbury Museum, The Rifles Museum, the National Trust’s Mompesson House, and Arundells.

The Cathedral That Moved

The current cathedral is actually the third built for the diocese. The first two stood at Old Sarum, an Iron Age hillfort a couple of miles north of the present site. Clashes between the cathedral clergy and the royal castle garrison there finally drove Bishop Richard Poore to abandon Old Sarum and build a new cathedral on the water meadows below. The stone from the old cathedral was carted down and recycled into the new one — you are looking at material that was already centuries old when the masons of 1220 first set it in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cathedral entry included in the tour fare?

Cathedral entry itself is by donation — please give what feels appropriate at the welcome desk. The Magna Carta exhibition is included in your donation. Optional extras (the Tower Tour, audio guides, refreshments at the Refectory Restaurant) are paid separately at the cathedral.

How long do we get at the cathedral?

Two hours, which is enough for the Magna Carta, the spire from below, the world’s oldest clock, the close, and a coffee. If you want to add the Tower Tour (an extra 90 minutes climbing the spire) it is best to book this on the cathedral’s website in advance, and discuss with your driver before booking the tour so we can arrange extra time on the day. Extra time is charged at £40 per hour, in 15-minute intervals.

Are the Tower Tour or other special tours available on the day?

Tower tours and other behind-the-scenes tours need to be pre-booked with the cathedral and tend to sell out, particularly in summer. We recommend booking these online at salisburycathedral.org.uk before your tour day. Mention your timed slot to your driver and the day’s pacing can be adjusted around it.

What does the New Forest route look like?

The drive from Southampton to Salisbury runs along the western edge of the New Forest, passing through woodland, heath, and small villages. You may see ponies, donkeys, or cattle grazing on the verges. If New Forest scenery is what you are looking for, our dedicated New Forest tour explores the area more thoroughly.

What if it rains?

The cathedral itself is fully indoors — and a rainy day can actually make the cathedral atmosphere more striking, with the rain on the cloister roof and the Chapter House lit gently inside. The cathedral close is most enjoyable in the dry; if rain is heavy on the day, we will time the visit to keep the close walking to a minimum.

Can the tour finish at Heathrow or another airport instead of returning to Southampton?

Yes — that is what the Transfer Tour version is for. Salisbury sits roughly between Southampton and London, so it works particularly well with a Heathrow Transfer Tour finish, but it can be combined with any of our airport or London routes. Choose Transfer Tour at the booking form and select your finishing destination.

Do you cover the Cathedral Close attractions (Mompesson House, Salisbury Museum)?

If you would like to add a visit to one of the close attractions in addition to the cathedral, mention it at booking and we will plan the time. A typical 4-hour Day Tour does not allow for a full second museum visit, but a quick walk-around or coffee stop at one of them is easy to fit in.
