800 Years of Naval History, 30 Minutes Down the Coast

Portsmouth has been a Royal Navy port since 1194, when Richard the Lionheart established a dock here for the medieval fleet. Eight hundred years later it is still the home of the modern Royal Navy — frigates and destroyers move in and out of the harbour every day — but the Historic Dockyard is also home to the most extraordinary collection of preserved warships in the world. HMS Victory, Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, sits in dry dock exactly where she was built. The Tudor warship Mary Rose, raised from the seabed in 1982 after 437 years underwater, lies in a purpose-built museum next door. HMS Warrior, the world’s first iron-hulled warship from 1860, is moored a short walk away. You can climb aboard all three.

The drive from Southampton to Portsmouth takes 30 to 40 minutes each way along the M27, leaving over two hours at the dockyard. What You’ll See on Your Tour

Two hours at the Historic Dockyard is enough for two of the three main ships and a quick look at one of the museums. Your driver will set you down at the dockyard entrance and arrange a pickup time. The dockyard itself is large — about 30 minutes’ walking distance from end to end — so a clear sense of priorities helps.

HMS Victory

Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 — and the world’s oldest naval ship still in commission. Launched in 1765, she fought in three major fleet actions, was Nelson’s command for the last two years of his life, and is the only surviving warship to have been at the Glorious First of June, the Battle of Cape St Vincent, and Trafalgar. You can climb the gangway and walk through the gun decks, the captain’s cabin, and the spot on the upper deck where Nelson was shot by a French marksman in the heat of battle. A brass plaque marks the place where he died below decks three hours later.

The Mary Rose

Henry VIII’s flagship, which capsized in the Solent in front of the king on 19 July 1545 with the loss of 500 lives. The wreck was raised from the seabed in October 1982 — one of the most-watched archaeological events of the 20th century — and is now displayed in a state-of-the-art museum that is one of the most original and atmospheric in Britain. The hull lies in a temperature- and humidity-controlled chamber, with thousands of recovered objects (longbows, surgical instruments, the ship’s dog, sailors’ personal possessions) displayed at the levels they would have occupied on the original decks. HMS Warrior

The world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship — launched in 1860, she made every other warship in the world obsolete the day she was commissioned. Designed in response to the French Gloire (the first ironclad), Warrior never fired her guns in anger because no opponent was prepared to take her on. Restored to her original 1860 condition between 1979 and 1987, she is now moored at the dockyard entrance and is the only surviving member of Britain’s first generation of armoured warships. The contrast with the wooden walls of HMS Victory just down the quay is the whole 19th-century revolution in shipbuilding in 200 yards.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy

Tucked between the ships in several restored 18th-century storehouses, the National Museum holds the Royal Navy’s collection of paintings, uniforms, weapons, ship models, and artefacts from a thousand years of naval history. The Trafalgar gallery is excellent — Nelson’s actual coat (with the bullet hole) is on display, alongside the ship’s wheel from HMS Victory. A 2-hour visit cannot do the museum justice; allow 30-45 minutes for the highlights.

Spinnaker Tower and Old Portsmouth

If your interests run beyond ships, the Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf Quays — a 170-metre observation tower with a glass floor — gives a 23-mile view across the Solent and the Isle of Wight, and is a 15-minute walk from the dockyard. Old Portsmouth, the Tudor harbour district where the Mary Rose set sail from in 1545, sits just round the corner with cobbled streets, harbour-side pubs, and the Round Tower (a 1418 fortification still in place). Most cruise passengers prioritise the dockyard, but ask your driver and they will adjust accordingly.

The Portsmouth tour is offered in two formats — a round-trip Day Tour returning to your cruise terminal or hotel, or a one-way Transfer Tour ending at any onward destination.

Are Historic Dockyard tickets included in the tour fare?

No. Tickets should be booked at historicdockyard.co.uk before your tour day. The Ultimate Explorer ticket covers all attractions (HMS Victory, Mary Rose, HMS Warrior, the National Museum, and harbour boat tours) and is valid for a year, which makes it good value.

Can we see all three ships in 2 hours?

Realistically, two of the three is comfortable; all three is rushed. HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum are the priorities for most visitors — Victory takes about 45 minutes, the Mary Rose another 45-60 minutes. HMS Warrior is a 30-minute visit if you want to climb aboard. If you want all three plus a museum visit, mention it at booking and we can extend the tour by an hour. Extra time is charged at £40 per hour, in 15-minute intervals.

What does HMS Victory look like inside?

You walk through the orlop deck (where Nelson died), the gun decks (low ceilings — be ready to duck), the captain’s cabin and great cabin where Nelson held his command meetings, and the upper deck where the actual fighting took place. The brass plaque marking the spot where Nelson was shot is on the quarterdeck. The ship is a working museum but it is also a real ship — 240+ years old, 100+ guns, with the masts and rigging fully restored.

How does the Mary Rose Museum work?

The Mary Rose herself is in the central glass-walled chamber of the museum, viewable from three levels. Each level corresponds to one of the original decks of the ship, with thousands of recovered objects displayed at the height they would have been on the original decks — so you walk past the surgeon’s instruments at the surgeon’s level, the longbows at the archers’ level, and so on. It is one of the most thoughtfully designed museums in Britain and worth the visit even if you only have an hour.

What if it rains?

Almost the entire dockyard experience is indoors or under cover — the ships have decks but you spend most of the time below decks, and the museums are fully indoors. The walking between attractions is the only outdoor element. The dockyard is one of our better wet-weather tour options.

Can the tour finish at Gatwick or another airport?

Yes — and Portsmouth is the most natural Transfer Tour pairing for Gatwick, since the A3 corridor runs north from Portsmouth directly towards Gatwick. The tour can also be combined with Heathrow, a London hotel, or any of our other onward destinations. Choose Transfer Tour at the booking form.

Is Portsmouth the same as the cruise port we sailed from?

No — Southampton is the cruise port; Portsmouth is the naval port, about 25 miles east. Cruise ships dock at Southampton and the Royal Navy is based at Portsmouth. They are separate cities with different histories. The drive between them takes 30-40 minutes.

Do you take local Southampton fares?
