England’s Oldest Royal Hunting Ground, On Your Doorstep

The New Forest sits a few minutes from Southampton’s cruise terminals, but step inside it and you have left modern England behind. William the Conqueror declared this a royal hunting ground in 1079 — making it, paradoxically, one of the oldest landscapes in the country. Around 5,000 ponies, several hundred donkeys, cattle, and pigs roam free across 200 square miles of heath, woodland, and ancient pasture, owned by local Commoners whose families have grazed the Forest for nearly a thousand years.

Driving through, you will see ponies grazing on the grass verges and crossing the lanes without a glance. Donkeys gather in village squares, especially around Beaulieu, where they have learned that pubs put out water bowls. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of one of the five species of deer that live wild in the Forest — although they tend to stay deep in the woods during the day. The pace is slow because the animals have right of way, and your driver will know the spots where they cluster.

What You’ll See on Your Tour

The route is built around four or five stops, each chosen by your driver to suit the day’s weather, the season, and your interests. The standard tour passes through some of the New Forest’s most-loved corners — but the order, and exactly where you spend the most time, is flexible. If you want to linger at a particular spot, your driver will take their cue from you.

Calshot Castle

An intact Tudor artillery fort built by Henry VIII in 1540, sitting on a narrow shingle spit at the mouth of Southampton Water. The castle was constructed using stone from Beaulieu Abbey after Henry’s dissolution of the monasteries — a connection you will see in person later in the tour. Calshot saw service for over four centuries, becoming an RAF seaplane base where Winston Churchill took his first ever flight in 1913 and where T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) helped run the famous Schneider Trophy air races. The views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight are magnificent.

Beaulieu Village

A single street of red-brick cottages running down to a millpond beside the tidal Beaulieu River — one of the prettiest villages in England, and the heart of the 9,000-acre Beaulieu Estate. The 13th-century Cistercian Abbey here was founded by King John in 1204 (the Latin name Bellus Locus, ‘beautiful place’, became Beau-lieu in French) before Henry VIII dissolved it. Today the estate is the home of the Montagu family, who have lived here for nearly 500 years — look out for the cottages with red front doors, which are still part of the estate. Donkeys are a regular sight in the village, often wandering through the High Street.

Lymington

A Georgian harbour town with cobbled streets running down to the quay, three marinas, and a famous Saturday market that has been held under royal charter since 1250. Lymington built its early wealth from sea-salt extraction and shipbuilding — including the schooner that raced America’s Cup in 1851 — and later became one of England’s most notorious smuggling towns, with stories of tunnels running from the old inns down to the quay. Today it is a yachting capital and home to Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie, in whose honour the High Street post box is painted gold.

Lyndhurst — the Capital of the Forest

Lyndhurst has been the administrative capital of the New Forest since William the Conqueror established the royal hunting ground in 1079. The medieval Verderers’ Court — the body that has governed the Forest’s commoning rights since the 14th century — still sits at the Queen’s House in the village. The Pre-Raphaelite parish church of St Michael and All Angels, with stained glass by William Morris and Burne-Jones, sits on a hill overlooking the village. Its churchyard contains the grave of Alice Pleasance Liddell — the real-life Alice who inspired Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, who lived most of her life in Lyndhurst after her marriage.

Ornamental Drive

A winding road through the Rhinefield and Bolderwood plantations, planted by the Victorians as an arboretum. You will pass towering Douglas firs, redwoods, and Giant Sequoias — some of the tallest trees in England. The route typically includes a stop at the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, where a viewing platform overlooks a meadow where fallow deer often appear at dawn and dusk. By day, your driver will know the most likely spots.

Your driver may swap one stop for another depending on the day — an alternative route can include the harbour at Buckler’s Hard (a tucked-away 18th-century shipbuilding village), the Norman village of Brockenhurst, or Lepe Beach with its views across to the Isle of Wight. The order and pacing are yours to shape on the day.

The New Forest tour is offered in two formats — a round-trip Day Tour returning to your cruise terminal or hotel, or a one-way Transfer Tour ending at Bournemouth Airport. Both run with the same standard of vehicle, driver, and itinerary flexibility.

The full driver-led tour as described above, structured to keep you comfortably ahead of the standard 17:30 cruise sail-away. Your driver will collect you at 10:00, run a route covering four or five of the major stops (Calshot Castle, Beaulieu Village, Lymington, Lyndhurst, and Ornamental Drive — exact order at the driver’s discretion based on the day), and return you to your pickup point in good time. Suited to passengers who want a full Forest experience and the flexibility to linger at the spots they enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will we definitely see the New Forest ponies?
Almost certainly, yes — there are around 5,000 ponies roaming free across the Forest, and the route passes through several of their main grazing areas. They often graze on the verges or cross the road, and your driver will slow down or stop where it is safe to do so. We cannot guarantee close-up sightings on any particular day, but in 40 years of running this tour we have not had a passenger leave without seeing them.
What about deer?
The New Forest has five species of wild deer — fallow, red, sika, roe, and muntjac. They are shyer than the ponies and tend to stay in the woods during the day, but the Bolderwood viewing platform on the Ornamental Drive route is the best place in the Forest to spot them. Early morning and late afternoon are the most likely times. If sightings are important to you, mention it to your driver and they will adjust the route accordingly.
Can we feed or pet the ponies?
No, and please do not — it is against New Forest byelaws and you can be fined. The ponies are semi-feral, can bite or kick, and feeding them causes serious dietary problems. The same applies to the donkeys and any other livestock you see. Photos from a respectful distance are fine and welcome.
Is there time to go inside Calshot Castle or Beaulieu Abbey?
Calshot Castle has a small English Heritage admission charge and a quick visit (15-20 minutes for the ground floor and roof views) can fit a 4-hour tour. Beaulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum are full-day venues and don’t realistically fit alongside the rest of the route. If the museum is your priority we recommend booking it as a separate day rather than trying to combine it with the wider Forest tour. We are happy to arrange this.
What if it rains?
The Forest is largely an outdoor experience, so rain does affect the comfort of stops. Your driver will weight the route towards the more sheltered options on a wet day — Lymington has plenty of cover in its narrow streets and shops, the Calshot Castle interior is dry, and Lyndhurst’s Pre-Raphaelite church is well worth half an hour out of the weather. The vehicle is comfortable for the in-between stretches.
Can the New Forest tour finish at Bournemouth Airport instead of returning to Southampton?
Yes — that is what the Transfer Tour version is for. The route from Southampton to Bournemouth Airport runs directly through the New Forest, so adding a tour stop or two on the way involves no significant detour. Choose Transfer Tour at the booking form and select Bournemouth Airport as your destination.
Does the tour include Beaulieu Motor Museum?
No — the Motor Museum is a full-day visit on its own, with over 280 vehicles to explore plus Palace House and the Abbey ruins. We deliberately keep it out of the 4-hour tour because it would not be possible to do it justice. If you want to visit, we are happy to arrange a separate dedicated day to Beaulieu, or drop you at the museum and collect you later.
Do you take local Southampton fares?
